What is actually on an unpainted toy

Unpainted does not mean bare. Something has to sit on the wood, and what that something is matters.

Short answer

An unpainted wooden toy usually carries a drying oil, a wax, or hardwax oil which combines both. Two marks are worth looking for on a label: DIN EN 71-3 for element migration and DIN 53160 for resistance to sweat and saliva. Both only apply once the product has fully cured.

Even on a toy we sell as unpainted, something sits on the wood. Leaving it bare is not an option: wood picks up dirt, stains, and raises fibres when it gets wet. The question is not whether there is a finish, but what it is.

Three options

Drying oils. Linseed and tung oil react with air and harden, so they genuinely dry. Raw linseed takes weeks; the boiled version dries fast but contains metal driers, which is why it is avoided on toys. Pure tung oil is considered food safe and is the only pure oil that is practical to apply.

Non-drying oils. Jojoba is not really an oil but a wax ester. It does not go rancid and keeps well, but it does not polymerise, so it forms no film. Protection is weak and it needs frequent reapplication. Blended with beeswax it gives a silky surface.

Waxes. Beeswax melts at 63 degrees, penetrates the fibre and offers reasonable water resistance, but needs renewing often. Carnauba melts between 82 and 86 degrees and its surface hardness is roughly eight times that of beeswax.

Hardwax oil. The most common solution on toys and furniture today. The oil penetrates the pores and the wax forms a breathable barrier on top.

Two marks worth looking for

DIN EN 71-3. The element migration part of the toy standard. The product is immersed in a solution simulating stomach conditions and the release of 19 elements is measured.

DIN 53160. Less well known and very relevant for toys: resistance to sweat and saliva. In other words, does anything come off the surface when a child puts it in their mouth.

Products carrying both exist. Osmo’s Polyx-Oil declares them, as do Livos ARDVOS and Biofa’s hard oil.

The detail that gets skipped: curing

This is missed almost everywhere. Those certifications apply after the product has fully cured. With hardwax oil, drying between coats takes 8 to 10 hours, but full cure takes two to three weeks.

So if a toy is boxed and shipped 24 hours after oiling, it has not cured by the time it reaches you. We keep ours on a ventilated rack for at least a week, preferably two, before shipping.

One more caution: “natural” does not mean “solvent free”. Products like Osmo contain dearomatised mineral spirit and declare a VOC figure. That is precisely why the cure time matters.

Care

Oil and wax wear off. On a heavily used toy we suggest a thin maintenance coat every 6 to 12 months.

  • Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not submerge.
  • Never put it in a dishwasher. Heat and detergent damage both the finish and the wood.
  • If the surface has gone matt and feels dry in the hand, it is time.
  • A food safe oil or wax is enough. Apply thinly and wipe off the excess.

A safety note for the workshop

This part is for makers rather than parents. Rags soaked in linseed or tung oil catch fire on their own. With no external ignition source, within hours. The oil produces heat as it oxidises and the cloth traps that heat.

Never leave oily rags in a pile or a closed bin. Either spread them in a single layer somewhere ventilated until completely dry, or keep them in a sealed metal container filled with water.
